The Judiciary employs Judges and Justices (Bar certified Lawyers who have served time in both the DAO and PDO) and Court Clerks. They are authorized to hear and decide on cases in a court of law. A Judge will hear cases of lower charges (non capital crimes), whilst a Justice can hear any case or Appeal. Both Judges and Justices can preside over traffic Court.
Justice (SCJ's) are responsible for the definitions in the penal code.
The Judiciary has the final say on Name Changes, Adoptions, Expungements, FOIA's, Background Checks, Bail hearings, and Criminal and Civil cases.
The Court Clerks are the backbone of the Judiciary, they assist in the administration and can provide support on Name Changes, Adoptions, Expungements, FOIA's, Background Checks and issue Orders to Appear.
The District Attorneys Office (DAO) employs Prosecutors (Bar certified Lawyers), Special Prosecutors (LEO's) and Paralegals. They represent the government in Criminal and Civil cases and are responsible for ensuring that justice is served by prosecuting individuals accused of committing crimes.
The DAO works alongside Law Enforcement providing advice on the penal code and charges.
The Public Defenders Office (PDO) employs Public Defenders (Bar certified Lawyers) and Paralegals. They represent members of the public in Criminal and Civil cases and are responsible for ensuring that justice is served by defending individuals accused of committing crimes.
The PDO can often be seen completing cell representations.
Private Attorneys (Bar certified Lawyers who have served time in either the DAO or PDO) and paralegals. They act in the same manner as members of the PDO but can choose which cases they wish to take and any fees related to them.
